Guru Purnima 2023 date in India: In India, the occasion of Guru Purnima, is celebrated by millions of Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains. This auspicious day falls on the Ashadha month’s full moon day and honours the divine connection between teachers and students. Guru Purnima will be observed on July 3 this year.

In Indian culture, a guru is not merely an instructor but a mentor, a beacon of wisdom, and a spiritual guide. This day is an opportunity to express gratitude and reverence towards our teachers, acknowledging their selfless dedication and invaluable contributions to our growth.

The significance of Guru Purnima dates back to the days when disciples gathered to pay respect to and ask for the blessings of their gurus. The word “guru” itself has a deep significance; it is taken from Sanskrit and denotes driving away darkness and pointing in the direction of light. On this day, disciples offer their respect by performing puja ( ritual worship), presenting gifts and expressing heartfelt gratitude for the knowledge, wisdom and guidance imparted by their gurus.

Legend has it that Lord Buddha gave his first sermon on this day, and as a result, his devotees honour him on this day. After spending five weeks under the Bodhi tree, Buddha left Bodhgaya and travelled to Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh.
